First Time Visitors

The Pastoral industry is an important one in Western Australia and a large portion of our State is set aside for the grazing of livestock. To tourists passing through this area which is largely pastoral, we offer the following guide and seek your co-operation in the interest of the preservation of this valuable industry.

  1. The majority of roads in the North West pass through pastoral properties and as such, properties should be regarded as private property.
  2. In the pastoral areas the main roads are not normally fenced, although station boundaries are usually indicated. Care should be taken as stock as well as kangaroos and emus may enter the roadway, without warning.
  3. Pastoral properties are a business operation with a high operating and capital cost. Any hinderance due to carelessness or vandalism can be extremely expensive to the owner.

Travellers wishing to enter onto pastoral properties should obtain permission from the owner. Call at the homestead end enquire where you can and cannot go.

The following are some guidelines for tourists on pastoral properties other than main roads;

  1. All gates should be left as they are found.
  2. The lighting of fires is prohibited.
  3. The dumping of rubbish is prohibited. Besides littering, tin cans and plastics can be fatal to livestock if swallowed.
  4. Do not camp near windmills and watering facilities. Livestock will stand off, not drink and possibly die of thirst.
  5. Swimming in water tanks is prohibited and dangerous.
  6. Fences should not be cut, removed or driven over.
  7. Do not interfere with livestock. Station stock are easily frightened.
  8. Shooting, or taking dogs onto a pastoral property is prohibited unless authorised by the owner.
Unsealed Shire and station roads are not “all weather roads” and must be kept off when wet. Damage to roads, without good reason may cost the offender the value of repair.
